Does Texting or Playing Hand-Held Games Cause Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

Is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome caused by texting or using hand-held video games?

The answer is “no”, although texting and playing video games can definitely cause pain in your hand and thumb and even into your arm. Maybe even your neck?  And, it is possible to have carpal tunnel symptoms additionally.

If you do all of your keypad strokes with your thumb, you may notice aching or tightness in the large thumb muscle on the palm side of your hand.  You might also have pain in your lower arm.

The pain in your palm/thumb area is caused by all of the muscular activity.  The pain in your lower arm occurs because your thumb muscles and tendons actually run up into your lower arm.  There they attach to the bone.

How can you get rid of the pain in your thumb and arm?

1.  Take the time

to move your thumb in different positions.  That lets all of your muscles in the area move in many different directions rather only the same one.

3.  Massage.  Press deeply into the muscles in the web of your thumb as well as your thick thumb muscle on the palm side of your hand.  Twist, pull, press and pinch (this is massage?) your lower arm.  More info under “Massage” in the “Categories.”

4.  Explore your whole arm to discover tight and tender areas that would love to be massaged.  Massage them.
