How Many Muscles Are In Your Hand & Can They Cause Pain In Your Hand

Have you been wondering about the muscles in your hands?

What do they look like?  Smallish.

How many are there?  Lots.

Can these muscles cause pain in your hand?  The answer is

yes.

Your thumb muscle (thenar muscle) is basically half of your hand.  The other half is your palm and fingers.

The thumb muscle gets used a lot and can become “tight” and painful.  But the good news is:  Hey, these are muscles and muscles can be treated (massaged) and get better.

So if you do have hand pain it could be referred from somewhere in your arm or it could be right where you feel it–in the muscles in your hand.

Go ahead and press into tender places in your hand.  If they seem to get less tender, then you may have just discovered the muscle that is causing your pain.

If the tender places don’t get less tender, then start a “seek and destroy” mission into your lower arm and see if you can find any sore places there.

Whenever you find a tender place, apply pressure for about 12 seconds to see if it “releases.”  If it does, good job!  If not, just keep feeling for more places and try again.

Sometimes the muscles that cause pain in your hand are quite far from your hand.  Sometimes they are even in your neck!

  1. Hi Delia,
Sometimes muscles in hands cause pain but sometimes the problem stems from muscles in your arm or even in your neck.
It’s important to know that such things as tight chest muscles can cause hand pain, too.
Please check the Category for Causes of Carpal Tunnel Symptoms on the right hand side of this page.
I hope you will find the answer to your pain there and if not, please write again.
