Are your hands stiff? Do you have carpal tunnel pain? Maybe your doctor said you have arthritis. That’s what they usually say when they don’t know why you have pain.
Or, sometimes, they just say, “You are getting old.” Thanks, doctor!
Here’s the thing: Most of the day we use our hands in a curled position. For most of us, it’s a palm-down, fingers-curled position.
You were built with over 600 muscles. You are supposed to use them all. You used to.
What happened?
Once we
“grew up” way too many of us stop using all of our muscles. We ended up using only 60 or 70 on a regular basis.
THAT is why we get into pain. That is why we start hurting. It actually IS the cause of arthritis, carpal tunnel symptoms, stiffness in our joints and reduction in our ability to move fully.
If you have the opportunity to watch a thin person moving her fingers, look at her lower arms. When she moves his fingers and hands, you will be able to see the muscles in her arms move, too. Your finger tendons (the ends of the muscles that attach to bone) go almost all the way to your elbow!
Pain in your hands and fingers can be caused by “tight” muscles in your forearm. Those are good muscles to treat, stretch, massage, press, pinch, or use heat or cold packs on.
The muscles on the palm side of your hand and arm are the ones that tend to get short. They need lengthening–they need to be stretched.
Always stretch your arms thoughtfully. You may experience the feeling of tightness but you don’t want to go into pain.
Rotate your whole arm and shoulder in every direction you can think of. Try to make perfect, smooth movements even if that means making the movements small. Small matters.
You do have to take action and you can have natural carpal tunnel pain relief. Stretching is one good thing to do and learning how to do your own carpal tunnel massage is another.
