What’s the Most Common Cause of Arm and Hand Pain?

What causes pain in your hands and arms?  Well, when bodies get out of balance pain or other uncomfortable symptoms are the result.

We get out of balance when we spend too much time doing any one thing (except yoga, maybe.)

Sitting is a killer and poor posture is a REAL killer.

So out-of-balance muscles are the most common cause of hand and arm pain.

Bodies LOVE to

move and that includes in all directions!  That’s what gets them back in balance.  Remember when you were a little kid?  You used ALL of your muscles running, jumping and playing.  But now?

What about stretching?

Stretching is a good thing but most folks stretch the wrong muscles.

The muscles that need the most stretching tend to be in the front of the body.  That’s not usually where it hurts but those muscles are the “bad guys.”

They get short and tight just because they can.  That’s why yoga helps so much–it is a full-body type of exercise.  All of the muscles get used.

And it’s always helpful to strengthen the muscles in the back of the body from the knees to the base of the head.  That helps them hold their own against the shorter front muscles.

So if you use your hands and arms in bent, curled finger positions you don’t want to make those muscles any more strong.  You want to open and stretch and lengthen them.

Normally, where you have long-standing pain is NOT where your problem is.  Long-standing pain usually occurs where muscles are weaker and over-stretched.

The palm side of your arm is often stronger.  Open and stretch your fingers.  Sleep or rest with your arms at your sides, thumbs turned out as far as you can (palms up).

What else helps?

Massage is a great natural tool for relaxing tight muscles and relieving hand and arm pain.  There are videos in Carpal Tunnel Natural Relief that demonstrate massage and movements to help you get back in balance.  It’s an easy-to-use program that I created just for you!

And getting a professional massage can be a wonderful thing to help relax the muscles that are too tight and tone the weaker muscles.

Just please don’t let your massage therapist blast away on the painful areas.  Insist on a balanced and thoughtful massage that treats the CAUSES of your hand and arm pain.

  1. Kathryn,
Great article! I’ve personally treated thousands of upper extremity patients over the past 15 years with great results. I’ve employed the hands of a few really talented massage therapists during those years too. You’re article is right on!
