Does Repetitive Movement Cause Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

Is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome caused by repetitive work?  Not according to National Institutes of Health research.  Their studies involved healthy people who did repetitive movement and did not get carpal tunnel symptoms!

So then, what does cause Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?  Let me count the ways…here’s a few:

1.  Sometimes it actually is caused by a reduction of space in your carpal tunnel.  The

carpal tunnel is a passageway through your wrist.  There are bones on three sides and tough tissue on the fourth side.  The “tunnel” can become smaller due to injury, illness or something going on in your whole body.  This could be caused by swelling, weight gain, rheumatoid arthritis, cysts or injury.

2.  The cause may be a vitamin deficiency.  Calcium, magnesium, potassium and iron are necessary for optimal muscle function.

3.  It could be trigger points in your neck, chest, back or arms “firing” (causing) pain and symptoms in your hand and wrist.  Claire Davies wrote an easy-to-use, self help trigger point book.

4.  It might be an auto-immune disease or diabetes.

5.  It could be related to poor posture.

6.  And the most common cause:  your muscles.

The study overview didn’t say the exact condition of the people who were in the study to start with.  If they were healthy young people with good posture and physically active lifestyles and strong backs and well nourished, they would be less likely to get symptoms from repetitive movement.

On the other hand, if someone is rather poorly nourished (lots of junk or highly processed fake foods) and doesn’t do strengthening exercises and spends long days in seated positions…well, the chances of getting Carpal Tunnel Syndrome or other muscle aches, pains and symptoms are much, much greater.
