Does Salt Cause Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Can salt cause carpal tunnel symptoms?  This is the question a reader asked.

Table salt (sodium chloride) can cause swelling in the tissues, probably more in some folks than others.

When I used to put lots of table salt on my popcorn, in the morning the tissues around my eyes would be swollen.  That means that other tissues were also swelled up.  Your body is a whole unit so whatever happens in one area is probably also happening elsewhere.

Since carpal tunnel symptoms may be caused by

swelling in the carpal “tunnel” in your wrist and if table salt causes you to swell, well, then…it could make you have symptoms.

Sea salt, on the other hand, has less sodium chloride, does not have the additives and processing that table salt does, and has lots of good minerals in it which we need.  Seriously need.

The flavor of sea salt is a little more delicate and less “salty” and we do need minerals so I believe that sea salt is a much better alternative than no salt at all.  You can find it at health food stores,T J Maxx or Home Goods stores, and probably in the grocery.  You can also find it online.

The salt from the Himalayan mountains is supposed to be free of contaminants.  It’s harvested from ancient dried seas.  You can also find Celtic sea salt and salt from our modern day oceans.  There are different varieties and each has somewhat of a different taste and color.  Try and enjoy different ones.  It’s a tasty way to get your minerals.

But you heard that salt is bad for you?  Turns out only a small percentage of the population has a bad response to salt.  And in my suspicious mind, I’ll bet that refers to table salt.

If you have any questions, please ask your doctor.  (I’m supposed to say that.)  🙂
